After graduating from college, Ruth taught elementary school for several years before she joined the U.S. Women's Army Corps. During her eleven yers in the military, she served as Company Commander; Procurement, Publicity, and Operations Officer, Personnel Services Office; and instructor of basic trainees and officer courses. When she left the military in 1967, she had attained the rank of Major and had been awarded the Army Commendation Medal. After retiring from the Army, she earned a Master's Degree in Education and obtained a teaching position in San Francisco where she taught middle school for over twenty years. She was awarded The Valley Forge Teacher's Medal. While teaching in California, Ruth joined the U.S. Army Reserves and was awarded the USAR Meritorious Service Medal, retiring from the Reserves at the rank of Lt. Colonel.
